OUR HISTORY

The LLSSA has been in existence since 1990. Review our timeline to learn how we have grown and changed over time, all in the best interest of our members.

Louisiana Becomes Charter State Association of NBFFA
We were caught off guard with the fire alarm law. It was passed by the time we got involved.

Monthly Meetings and First Level I Courses
Luncheon meetings were held once a month in New Orleans with limited participation from dealers outside the New Orleans area. Held 1st NICET Prep course and facilitated NICET testing in order to meet the fire licensing requirements. 1st Level I Certified Alarm Technician course held.

First Level II Course and Defeat of Fire Alarm Amendment
1st Level II course held. The electricians attempted to amend the fire law to allow only licensed electricians to install commercial fire alarm systems. Members were able to defeat the amendment.

Meetings in Every Major City
69 Board of Directors agreed to meet in every major city in Louisiana once this year: Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Alexandria, Lake Charles, Monroe, Shreveport and New Orleans.

Regional Meetings and National Alarm Convention
Set up four regions within the state with one state meeting per quarter, per region. Gathered membership together with monthly regional meetings for sharing common problems, goals and ideas. Louisiana hosted the 1994 National Burglar & Fire Alarm Convention in New Orleans.

1995
Passage of Burglar Alarm License Law
Passed Burglar Alarm License Law with tremendous statewide effort of alarm dealers and their employees, considered to be one of the best license laws in the country.

First Annual Trade Show
First Annual Trade Show with 32 exhibitors held in conjunction with the state meeting in New Orleans.

September 11th Attack and 5th Annual Trade Show
September 11th Attack. 5th Annual Trade Show with 41 exhibitors and 7 sponsored CEU courses held. Board of Directors added a new committee, Homeland Security.

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
Trade Show canceled due to damage to The Landmark Hotel and hardships suffered in South Louisiana. Due to Katrina & Rita, all CEU requirements were suspended.

10th Annual Trade Show
Dues decreased on a state and national level to help members recover from Katrina & Rita. 10th Annual Trade Show, at a new location: The Pontchartrain Center in Kenner with 78 exhibitors and 14 sponsored CEU courses.

Changed Name
We changed our name from Louisiana Chapter of the NBFAA to Louisiana Life Safety & Security Association.

First Dealer Conference
The first Dealer Conference held in Monroe, LA. An event focused on industry information and trends presented by leaders in their professions.

2013
Dealer Conference Moved
The Annual Dealer Conference was moved to Natchitoches, LA. A quaint historic town which is the oldest permanent settlement in Louisiana Purchase.

Mapes and Mapes
LLSSA hires Lobbyist Mapes and Mapes. They monitor, gather information, gain access to the decision makers, build coalitions and partnerships and fight by our sides should any legislation be presented that would have a negative effect on the life safety and property protection industries.

20th Annual Trade Show
20th Annual Trade Show with 82 Exhibitors and 16 sponsored CEU Courses.

Dealer Conference Expanded
The 5th Annual Dealer Conference was expanded to a day and a half. This allowed for a welcome reception and hosting of the State Fire Marshal Administrative Classes.

COVID 19
COVID hit the world in March and all in person events had to be canceled. We pivoted and held classes via zoom and held our first ever Zoom Convention “Out of the Box.”

Hurricane Ida
Hurricane Ida hits Port Fourchon as a Category 4 with 150 mph winds.

10th Annual Dealer Conference
10th annual Dealer Conference in Natchitoches, LA with 91 attendees and 25 exhibitors.

Lobbyist, Mapes and Mapes work with the LLSSA to support/fight 8 Bills put forth during the Legislative Session.
